Excitement has been building in Gastown. For good
reason. The area is being revitalized by a number of restoration
and new construction projects, with others in the works.
All this activity is attracting more residents to Gastown every
year. It’s bringing in new businesses. It’s generating
more human traffic than ever, adding to the sense that this is a
‘happening’ area of the city.
Much of the revitalization has been triggered by the Gastown Heritage
Management Plan. This initiative of the City of Vancouver encourages
developers to retain and improve heritage buildings rather than
tear them down, with incentives including grants for building façade
improvements, property tax relief and a bonus density program.
You can see the benefits of the Plan at 55 Water Street where the
building constructed in 1912 has received a $10 million upgrade.
You can see it in the 56 new live/work spaces that have been created
recently. You can see it at 211 Columbia where an extensive renovation
is providing improved high-tech ready office space. And you’ll
see much more in the coming months.
New developments underway include: 24-26 & 28-38 Water Street;
33 Water Street; 46-52 Water Street and 55 East Cordova Street.
Gastown today is more than the historical centre of Vancouver and
a Mecca for tourists. More and more, Gastown is a place where residents
come for entertainment, recreation, culture, classes…and to
live and work.
