But incredible spaces do not happen by chance. They are carefully explored, thought-out and planned; they are the product of good interior design.

That's why we talked to the designers at Gastown's Good Space. People are aware of the value of design, and what good design is. Good design makes you comfortable where you are.
As Dwaina says “A good designer can change your life”.
We had a quick chat with designers and business partners Dwaina and Brent about their design perspectives. Then they offered to supply us with ten amazing reasons why interior designers like Dwaina, Brent, Lauren, and Josephine of Good Space are just the thing that you and your space need.
What’s different about Goodspace?
Brent - What we do that’s slightly different from the average design company what we call our Good Space Plans. They are detailed interior design plans that the clients execute themselves. This way they can take over the project management themselves. It’s fully detailed and everything is fully specified for them.
We can help them execute it, but they don’t have to commit to that all up front.

What inspired that idea?
Dwaina - Interior design services are a luxury service -- there's no question about it. It's truly for the wealthy, and yet it is something that should be accessible to everybody. To be comfortable in your home is a basic principle of life. You should feel at ease and have things function well and work well.
Somewhere along the way a lot of mystery and intrigue came around the industry and it really made it lack accessibility to most people. We thought there must be a way that we can make this accessible to more people in bite sized chunks that they can actually take on.
We thought about how we could give people full comprehension and address all the elements in their space and put it in an affordable manageable format. That’s what started it.
What are some other unique benefits of your Good Space plan?
Dwaina - We think this is the way of the future. We can do this long distance now. We can do someone’s home for them in Calgary, New York, or Toronto now. There’s been a whole shift. When we first started what we were lacking was the technology, that really was what was missing for us. And now the technology has arrived.
Brent - We have a process for how we determine what the client needs. We want to see inspiration images of what the client likes. We also have them do an extensive lifestyle questionnaire. We want to really get to know them.

What size of projects can you do?
Brent - We can do single rooms to multiple rooms to full houses. We are set up to handle single room spaces all through the plan. A lot of designers don’t want these small projects, and they are not set up to handle them.
Dwaina - We feel that an entire space is addressed wholistically.
Do you have taste preferences?
Brent - I think one of the big misconceptions about interior design is that we are going to come in and design a space that looks like ‘me’, but really our job is to take your ideas and refine and create a space that looks and feels like you.
We’ve got our favorites and favorite pieces that we re-use because they are functional and beautiful. But our job is to figure out what you want, what you look like, and what will feel like you.
Dwaina - Most people know what they love and what they need, but they don’t know how to refine it into the most stylish or polished version of that. We refine and polish what’s already there.
What about the “trends”?
Brent - There’s always trends. We are obviously affected by them and we tap into the ones that we like, but we try to stay somewhat long term and try to look for something that is going to be beautiful ten years from now, and not just necessarily for the Fall
Dwaina - And if there is a trend it is accessibility. I think people are starting to recognize that everything is available to them. Exclusivity is not existing anymore. At any price point someone can get what they want. Online you can find almost anything.
Overall, we are noticing just a fearless approach to everything.

10 REASONS YOU NEED AN INTERIOR DESIGNER (FROM THE TEAM AT GOOD SPACE)
THEY'RE EXPERTS.
Interior design is a delicate balance of art and science. Just as accountants and lawyers go to school to fully learn their craft, so do they.
SAVE TIME.
Interior designers understand what needs to be done and when to do it. They can anticipate pitfalls and obstacles you might not be aware of. And they'll sweat the details and minutia so they don’t trip you up later.
SAVE MONEY.
Interior design should never be an open-ended, “it costs what it costs” thing. Make sure your interior designers knows and respects the importance of a line item budget. Before a dollar is spent, they can help you understand where each one is going.
DON'T MAKE COSTLY MISTAKES.
Ever bought a piece of furniture that looked so good in the store, but was a too big once you got it home? Ever painted three or four times trying to find a colour that works? Because we trained professionals, we can steer you clear of those common mistakes and help you get it right the first time.
REFINE YOUR IDEAS.
It is a common belief that an interior designer will take over your home and inflict their design style on you. Truth be told, a good interior designer will work with you, refining your vision, taking your ideas and making them better.
AND GET SOME FRESH ONES.
While you have been agonizing over your space for weeks or months, interior designers are able to look at it with fresh perspective. It’s amazing what a set of new, well-trained eyes can see.
GET ACCESS TO NEW PRODUCTS (AND REPURPOSE YOUR OLD ONES).
Interior designers spend our lives immersed in the world of design. They know what’s new and exciting. Still, the best designers also love to make old things new again, taking a cherished piece you’ve had forever and breathing new life into it.
MAKE YOUR SPACE WORK BETTER.
It is important that your interior designer strives to understand the way you live and the way you want to live and make certain the functionality of your space meets both. We also understand the relationship of the various pieces within your space and how they need to fit together.
GET CONNECTED.
We work with a wide variety of talented trades people and can introduce you to one that is perfect for your particular job.
SAFE, HEALTHY HOMES.
It's important stuff, what you come into contact with everyday. Interior designers know that not all products are created equal, and that some are simply going to be safer, work better and endure longer for you and your family.
