-------Beer List (Sept 2006)

DARK BEER

Hermanns Dark Lager Victoria 4.75
Victoria. City of gardens & government. Home to the
very old & very young,. Home to Hermann. This medium bodied
dark lager is softly hopped with a toasted malt nose, giving it a
slightly nutty character & a clean, smooth finish.

Oatmeal Stout Quebec 5.00
As rich & creamy as a pampered prince. As dark &
bitter as the knight who comes to his rescue. Together they
ride gallantly to your table. Introduce yourself, you‘ll be pleased
you did.

Oyster Stout 500 ml England 7.25
In the time of Dickens, a poor man’s only comforts were
oysters & a stout. And indeed, this unlikely combination inspired
many an anthem. Oyster Stout is dark, rich & smooth with a slight
bitterness, though regrettably does not taste like oysters.

Gulden Draak Barley Wine Belgium 7.75
Hop aboard the Golden Dragon as you journey long into
the night. Be mindful though, the dark & heavy waters are rich &
glowing, but not for the faint of heart. For those who dare, a great
reward lies ahead. Good luck.

London Porter 500 ml England 8.25
1727. Gavin , a porter of west London ’ s shipping district
finishes a terrible day & enters a pub. He takes a seat in the back
corner of the room & orders a pint of his favourite blend. He takes
a long swill - smooth, rich & strong. Delicious, & now available
without the work load.

ALE

Granville Island Pale Ale Vancouver 4.25
Fast becoming a Vancouver classic, an English Bay Pale Ale is
fair reward for walking the entire Sea Wall. Too many however, & you
may find yourself in short shorts & a spandex top doing one arm
push-ups for tourists.

Phillips Maple Cream Ale Victoria 4.75
Real maple syrup is used to accent this medium bodied cream
ale. The draught dodger is not too sweet, a touch nutty, and proudly
Canadian

Phillips I.P.A. Victoria 4.75
Unfiltered pale ale with a high level of alcohol & extra hops
for a distinct bitterness. India Pale Ale was introduced in the early
1700’s by British Brewers in attempt to preserve their beer on long
ocean voyages, especially into hot Indian climates. Clever

Newcastle Brown Ale England 4.75
The classic brown ale. If you’re a fan of Sleeman’s Honey Brown
you should try Newcastle. Its light in body & goes down smooth &
easy. Newcastle was first brewed in 1927 & continues to be a
popular choice for those who want something darker but not too
radical.

Cooper’s Sparkling Ale Australia 5.25
With its light cloudy sediment, hoppy taste & fruity flavour,
Cooper’s is a tasty Australian ale. Pleasing thirsty folk & providing
liquid courage to kangaroo boxers since 1862.

Duckstein 500ml Germany 6.75
Reportedly a favourite in the court of Frederick the Great,
Duckstein owes its smooth flavour to a 500 year old recipe. Richly
copper in colour, Duckstein is fermented with beechwood chips to give
it that German touch.

Hobgoblin 500 ml England 7.25
Beneath a lolling canopy in the lowland marshes of rural
Great Britain, a small & misshapen man brews beer. His
demenour is cheerful as he passes you a ruby red ale. Without
hesitation you drink. Full bodied, slight chocolate. Moderately
bitter & fruity. Very tasty.

Bombardier 568 ml England 7.50
The patron pint of England. A salute to freedom. A true
champion. Amber in colour, rich in flavour with a slight fruit zip.
A fantastic ale.

LAGER & PILSNER

Phoenix Gold Victoria 4.50
A flavourful Bavarian lager from Victoria in the classic stubby
bottle. Phoenix is a crisp, hoppy brewsky. The mythical sacred
firebird is cool too.

Pilsner Urquell Czech Republic 4.75
A crisp, clean, slightly hoppy golden pilsner. “Urquell” means
“ original source,” and this beer is the world’s first pilsner. Hailing from
Plzen, Bohemia in the Czech Republic, Pilsner Urquell was born in
1842. It’s been bringing back memories of everyone’s backpacking trip
through Europe ever since.

Harp Lager Ireland 4.75
The Irish golden lager & yet another member of the Guiness
posse. Harp is crisp & refreshing when cold, smoother as it warms &
casually sweet. Those who like it order it often.

Sol Mexico 4.75
The whisper of the approaching tide wakens you. The hot
sun lays low in the sky. What a beautiful evening. You reach for a
clean refreshing lager. Ahhhhh...

Red Stripe Jamaica 4.75
Light, golden lager crafted to suit the hottest of sunny days.
The first red stripe was brewed in 1928 at the Surrey Brewery on
Penchon St. in downtown Kingston. Nice up the stubby.

Stella Artois Belgium 4.75
One of Europe’s most popular export lagers.. Brewed in
Leuven, Belgium’s ‘ uncontested beer capital,’ Stella Artois first
appeared in 1366 as Den Horen, “The Horn.” Stella, today’s safe
choice in premium lager.

Tiger Singapore 4.75
Established circa 1932 in Singapore & now brewed in nine
countries including Papua New Guinea. Tiger is a smooth, light
lager & one of the most popular beers of Asian descent.
Grrrrrrrrrrrreat!

Peroni Nastro Azzurro Italy 5.25
A light, hoppy, dry Italian beer. The name means
“blue ribbon” and it’s an excellent way to end a long day. After a
few, you’ll find yourself speaking in a tragically fake Italian accent
& enjoying yourself immensely.

Kingfisher India 5.25
Take a journey between the wings of the Kingfisher to a
warm, golden place full of life & abundance. Upon arriving you
will be welcomed by tall, kind man who will offer you a seat. He
passes you a golden lager. You think, “the beer’s pretty good.”

Alhambra Spain 5.50
Imagine the sun is setting over Granada. The rhythmic
pitter-patter of clapping hands enchants you as you marvel at the
delicate beads of sweat dancing on olive skin. Your beer arrives in
a sexy green bottle. Fresh & a touch bitter, strong, smooth &
flavourful.

Grolsch 473 ml Holland 6.50
Though similar to a Becks or Heineken, Grolsch has a
unique freshness, with a more herbal, hop character & a cleaner
malt background. And who can deny the excitement of cracking
a swingtop?

Czechvar 500 ml Czech Republic 6.75
This is the original Budweiser. If you're a modern day
Bud man, we can't help you. This exceptional lager has been
brewed by handsome Bohemian craftsman since 1265. Czechvar
is full-bodied, crisp, tangy and demands to be savored.

Zywiec 500 ml Poland 6.75
Founded by the Hapsburg empire in the 19th century.
Zywiec is a nice, crisp pilsner perfect for a garden party. It
definately wins the prize for the most difficult pronunciation.

Tusker 500 ml Kenya 7.50
A pleasant & easy going Kenyan lager.. Popularily known
as “keroro ” beer, Tusker is best enjoyed when parched & sweaty.
We encourage elephant-like trumpeting upon requesting another.

WHEAT, WHITE BEER

Hoegaarden Belgium 4.75
A patio favourite. But before the time of the popular
‘ urban patio,’ Hoegaarden was there. Indeed, its recipe dates back
to 1445 when crafted by diligent monks with ample time on their
hands. From their hands to yours, a refreshing white beer with
hints of coriander & curacao peels.

Konig Ludwig 500 ml Germany 6.50
With a name like Konig Ludwig you have little choice but to
be good. And this is no exception. This slightly cloudy, lemon
coloured heffeweissen is pleasantly crisp, tart & refreshing.
I’m moving to Germany.

Schneiderweisse 500 ml Germany 6.75
Considered to be the king & original wheat beer of Barvaria
since 1872. This is Octoberfest in a bottle. Hawk loved it so much
he brought 20 home in his backpack only to discover that they were
available in Canada. And we’re all glad that it is. Enjoy.

Tripel Karmeliet Belgium 7.25
On a lazy day in the calm of the Belgian countryside, the
women of harvest collect grain. Three grains. Wheat. Barley. Oats.
They had one thing in mind. Strong, blonde beer with a bubbly pop &
a fruit kick. Nice.

Maudite 750 ml Quebec 10.25
Unibroue is a unique brewery. Their beer are among the
most interesting in the country. This strong, golden ale is a fine
example, with its slight fruit smack & light spicy aroma.
