Weekly Suds: Russell Brewing’s Blood Alley Extra Special Bitter

Written by  Administrator , on Tuesday, 13 September 2011 12:53

Named after Gastown's very own cobblestone laneway, this local beer is brewed right next door in Surrey, BC.

Russell Brewing is renowned for using quality ingredients and natural processing, and while this beer is relatively new to the scene, it has received nothing but excellent reviews, and gained an affectionate following.

This deep amber-coloured beer is absolutely unique. While it is slightly higher in bitterness than the average Extra Special Bitter (ESB) style beers, Blood Alley is well-balanced by the rich, roasted malt flavours – aromas of grapefruit emerge, and the beer is finished off with subtleties of caramel and a nice long finish.

Bloody Alley is available on draught at the Irish Heather and Shebeen, whose entrances face this historic lane, and it is offered by the bottle at Salt Tasting Room, cozily tucked away at 45 Blood Alley. This ESB pairs perfectly with the Heather’s Bangers and Mash, a wicked marriage of Pork Bangers from JN&Z deli on Commercial Drive with russet potatoes and buttermilk onion rings in a Guinness Mustard Jus.
